Food Allergy Treatment Options
The standard of care for food allergy has long been avoidance of the food(s) and treatment of allergic symptoms and anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) with injectable epinephrine. Over the past decades, research has focused on treatment using oral immunotherapy (OIT) taken by mouth, epicutaneous immunotherapy (EPIT) worn as a patch, and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) placed under the tongue. The purpose of these types of treatments is to prevent or decrease the severity of allergic reactions (including anaphylaxis) that may occur after accidental ingestion of a food allergen.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved Palforzia, a standardized OIT product for peanut allergy. Studies are underway for OIT products for egg and other food allergies. Another investigational product called Viaskin is currently being evaluated by the FDA as EPIT for peanut and milk allergies. Ongoing studies are also looking at OIT to multiple foods at once and/or with the addition of medications that can alter the immune response, which might make this type of immunotherapy safer.
