On January 3, 2020, Rady Children’s learned of a data security incident that involved radiology-related patient information. Upon learning of the incident, we secured the affected information and launched an investigation. Our investigation determined that, between the dates of June 20, 2019 and January 3, 2020, information for a limited number of patients was accessed without authorization via an Internet port. On February 5, 2020, our forensic analysis determined that information regarding specific individuals was involved.
The patient information involved in the incident did not involve Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, radiology images, radiology reports, or diagnoses. The patient information did include patient name, gender, and type and date of imaging studies. In some instances, the patient information also included one or more of the following information types: date of birth, medical record number, parent/guardian name, description of imaging study and name of referring physician.
We are notifying 2,360 patients whose information may have been accessed and providing them with steps they can take to protect their personal information. We are notifying the appropriate state and federal regulatory agencies. Any patient or parent or legal guardian who receives a letter should review the steps outlined in the letter to protect their personal information.
