Type 1 Diabetes Screening, Staging, and Monitoring at Rady Children’s T1D at Risk Clinic
Screening for early detection. monitoring and intervention to delay Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) are available via our T1D at Risk Program! The program is for children and adolescents under the age of 18 who are at risk for developing type 1 diabetes. These individuals usually have a family member with T1D, who, in most cases, is a sibling.
Although 90% of people who develop T1D have no family history, the risk is higher for someone with a family member who lives with T1D: they have a 1-in-20 risk of developing T1D, which is about 15 times higher than those without a family history.
Type 1 diabetes is the most prevalent form of diabetes in childhood. It is an autoimmune disease that prevents the body from producing insulin, leading to dangerously high blood sugar levels. Currently, there is no cure for T1D.
Rady Children’s Hospital is proud to host one of the first nationwide programs dedicated to the screening, staging, and delay of type 1 diabetes. The program aims to delay the onset of T1D, reduce the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and provide essential support and resources to patients and their families.
